About Lab4SLC
Research
We study technologies that support communication between people and between people and computers through language. Our research focuses on speech recognition and synthesis, machine translation, and language analysis, as well as applications of large language models such as writing assistance and the analysis of social media posts. See our research overview for specific topics.
Research with laboratory students as first authors has been presented at the Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, the Ongaku Symposium (IPSJ Special Interest Group on Spoken Language Processing), and meetings of the IPSJ Special Interest Group on Natural Language Processing. Details are listed in our research publications.
Supervision and Study Groups
During the semester, each of the following meets once a week:
- Laboratory seminar: Research progress reports, paper presentations, and tutorials by the faculty member.
- Foundational study group for undergraduates: Reading and discussing introductory textbooks on natural language processing, spoken language processing, machine learning, mathematics, and related topics.
- Study group for graduate students: Reading and discussing textbooks on artificial intelligence and large language models, as well as journal articles and conference papers in related fields.
In addition, students have individual research meetings with the faculty member approximately once every two weeks.
Student Facilities
- Each student has a desk in the student laboratory with a 27-inch LCD monitor.
- As a current measure, graduate students are loaned a laptop PC for the duration of their enrollment.
Computing and API Resources
Our shared Ubuntu computing environment includes GPU servers and workstations with 13 NVIDIA RTX GPUs in total, as well as an NVIDIA DGX Spark. Data storage is provided by a file server with approximately 100 TB of usable capacity and a backup server.
In addition to our on-premises shared computing resources, we use APIs from OpenAI and Google in our research.
